Acharnis (2020)
Choreography based on music for 23 performers.
Description:
The first surviving comedy by Aristophanes Acharnes (425 BC).
We are in the sixth year of the Peloponnesian War. The farmer Dikaiopolis, disappointed by the indecision of his fellow citizens to make peace with Sparta, takes the initiative and frees himself and his family from the sufferings of war. Determined to enjoy what he was deprived of, to celebrate life and reap the fruits of peace, he goes all the way to expose the selfishness and vileness, and open the eyes of those who have been blinded by arrogance, false pride and the demagogic rhetoric.
The specific comedy raises concerns, criticizes harshly any attitude or crisis that is directed against the state of democracy and the interest of many, and, finally, offers the audience plenty of laughter.
The director Varnavas Kyriazis, having at his side a large cast of actors and creative staff sets up a show that is eminently aristocratic, with all the ingredients of a popular celebration, a noisy Dionysian festival that smells of earth and wine, a feast reaching the cleansing of ecstasy.
