Panayiotis Tofi choreographic research embraces topics of concealment, dispossession and decentralisation while focusing on the beauty, exhaustion, and failure of the uninhabited human body and the uncanny presence of the unfamiliar. His works are recognised by subtle yet striking minimalism, the use of poetic text, elements of romanticism and intense physicality.
Initially a trained visual designer, Panayiotis graduated from Trinity Laban with a First Class Bachelor of Contemporary Dance and a Diploma in Dance Studies. ‘Mon Otage’ (2023), ‘Body of Mine’ (2022), ‘Excavated Anatomies’ (2020) and ‘Never Been Missed’ (2017) are a fine example of his choreographic methodology and aesthetics.
He is a highly appreciated theatre movement designer and director who has been awarded as ‘Creator of the Year’ by Cyprus Theatre Organisation in 2018 for his artistic versatility, imaginativeness and boldness towards experimentation. His collaborations in this field include names of prominent theatre groups and directors, amongst which Yiannis Paraskevopoulos, Heinz-Uwe Haus, Aliki Danezi Knütsen, Demetris Baslam, Paris Erotokritou, Physical Plastic, Amalgamation Choir, Marios Kakoullis, Kostas Silvestros and Panagiotis Larkou.
He has collaborated as an actor, dancer and performer with several creators from Europe amongst which Charles Linehan, Vania Gala, Fred Gehrig, Fotis Nicolaou, Alexis Vassiliou and Lia Haraki.
Based on his choreographic research and movement vocabulary he has lead movement and composition workshops in Stockholm, Naples, Athens, Syros and Nicosia while teaching Movement for Theatre, Floor work, Contact and Improvisation to professionals, adults and dance students.
